Nutshell Lyrics – Meaning of the song

February 5, 2012

This is one of my favorite Alice in Chains song and the Nutshell Lyrics by Layne Staley (singer of Alice in Chains) are haunting.

Layne Staley was asked what the meaning was behind this song and he said, “What a song means is entirely up to the listener, what you as a listener will get from a song is the true meaning”.

We will never know the true meaning of the song. So this is going to be my interpretation of the Nutshell Lyrics.

This song is most likely about drug addiction like most of his songs. Layne Staley was a drug addict and he died from his addiction in 2002.

We chase misprinted lies
We face the path of time

I think this has something to do with him being a rock star but he is not happy, being an addict. You shouldn´t chase the illusion of being a rock star if you then become unhappy.

And yet I fight
And yet I fight
This battle all alone
No one to cry to
No place to call home

I don´t think this was actually the case. Layne had people around him who cared about him and were willing to help him. If you are fighting drug addiction, you will probably feel like you are fighting these battles all alone.

My gift of self is raped

This is how he felt. I do not think he is blaming somebody for raping him. Just his addiction and his depression.

My privacy is raked

Here he is most likely talking about the media.

And yet I find
And yet I find
Repeating in my head
If I can’t be my own
I’d feel better dead

My feeling is, this verse is about his addiction and his depression in general, just like the whole song. Lot of people try understand what he means by If I can’t be my own/I’d feel better dead. When I interpret the Nutshell Lyrics I tend to go with the more general approach.

The most important thing is to understand where Layne Staley is coming from. All of his adult live he fought his drug addiction, he fought many battles. But in the end he lost. This song is (in my opinion) about one of his battles.

When you think about his fade and listen to the song and read the Nutshell Lyrics along, it gives you the chills.

Nutshell Lyrics

We chase misprinted lies
We face the path of time
And yet I fight
And yet I fight
This battle all alone
No one to cry to
No place to call home

My gift of self is raped
My privacy is raked
And yet I find
And yet I find
Repeating in my head
If I can’t be my own
I’d feel better dead

I recommend you learn how to play the guitar and I most definitely recommend you learn how to play the piano and last but not least make them beats!
